What she remembers
Is his glistening back
In the bath, his small boots
In the ring of boots at her feet.
Hands in her voided lap
She hears a daughter welcomed.
It's as if he kicked when lifted
And slipped her soapy hold.
Once soap would ease off
The wedding ring
That's bedded forever now
In her clapping hand.
As you read the poem you see how a mother is going through many different emotions about her son getting married. She feels like she is loosing her son because there mother son bond will never be the same there will always be his soon to be wife involved. But at the same time she is very happy that her son has someone to love and spend the rest of his life. The mother is happy that she will be getting a daughter. For the mother it feels like her whole life is about to change and she is not sure if its for the best of not.
